WHY MONA LISA IS SMILING

ONE OF THE GREAT MYSTERIES IN ART concerns the reason behind the somewhat lascivious smile that Leonardo da Vinci painted on the face of his celebrated Mona Lisa. What she might have been smiling about in 1503 or thereabouts is difficult to determine. Today, however, we're certain she might be more than amused by the French government's recent decision to finance the operating expenses of France's art museums with increased taxes on pornographic films, videos and magazines.
