As the driver of global trade, the Asia-Pacific region has some of the largest container ports in the world, including the world’s three largest, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. It also has some of the strongest and most rapidly emerging economies, from the world’s manufacturing and export giant China to South Korea, the United States’ newest free trade partner. However, as emerging markets, they are inextricably linked to the largest consumer markets in the world: the U.S. and Europe. So when the economies in those two regions lag, Asia feels a major impact. That is the case now, with the U.S. economy creeping along with slow growth, and much of Europe stuck in a debt-driven recession. But the outlook is improving, especially for the second half of 2013, so some reason for optimism is returning for ocean carriers and shippers operating in the world’s two largest ocean shipping routes, the Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific.

This Webcast will examine the outlook for this critical trade region, the impact Europe’s financial crisis and the U.S. economy will have on Asia and what it all means for oceanborne and airborne trade and the carriers that handles it.

FREE Webcast: Peak Season Forecast Editorial Webcast-TBD

Shippers and carriers across all modes again are anxiously watching the economy. On the ocean side, cargo volumes are increasing, but an onslaught of new capacity entering the market is pressuring rates, and carriers are doing everything in their power — slow-steaming, consolidating routes and idling ships — to bring supply-demand into better balance. Air cargo carriers face similar, if even deeper challenges, as traditional airborne freight increasingly shifts to other modes. Intermodal rail, meanwhile, is growing on the international side, but the true star is domestic traffic as increasing cargo shifts from the truckload market.

This webcast will analyze the outlook for trade during the busiest time of the year for shippers, carriers and third-party logistics companies — the run-up to the holiday shopping season — and what it means for freight rates and profitability.

FREE Webcast: Trucking Outlook Editorial Webcast-TBD

For the first time in years, optimism is beginning to outweigh caution among trucking executives perennially described as “cautiously optimistic.” The reason is simple: Trucking outperformed the general U.S. economy last year and far outdistanced the international shipping economy. In the process, profitability picked up, helped by a supply-demand balance the industry hasn’t seen in years. But the industry also faces significant challenges. A driver shortage may only intensify later this year, when new hours-of-service regulations reduce the time drivers can spend behind the wheel. That could further tighten capacity, putting greater strains on shippers at the height of the peak trucking season.

This webcast will analyze the outlook for trucking in the second half of the year, particularly during the run-up to the holiday shopping season.

FREE Webcast: World’s Top 50 Container Ports and Operators-TBD

Perhaps no other evidence of China’s emergence as a manufacturing powerhouse is needed than the JOC’s list of Top 50 global container ports. While Hong Kong and Singapore have traded the top spot among global ports for the better part of 15 years, Shanghai and other Chinese ports have been the fastest-growing over the past 10 years. That’s largely been driven by China’s emergence as a major manufacturing center and exporter. But with a rapidly growing middle class driving up wages, global manufacturers and shippers again are looking to diversify their sourcing. What will this mean for he world’s container ports?

This webcast will analyze the JOC’s Top 50 Container Ports report, discuss the economic and logistics factors driving growth among regional, country and individual ports and the challenges they face.

FREE Webcast: Inland Distribution

Timed in the aftermath of the JOC’s Inland Distribution Conference, this webcast will analyze the process of strategically transporting and positioning imports at inland North American locations for distribution to retail locations and consumers, as well as the process of moving exports to coasts and land borders.

Drawing on the lessons learned at the JOC conference, this webcast will examine the myriad of choices and challenges confronting shippers once imports hit North American seaports and land borders, including how to mix and match transport modes optimally, whether transloading is a viable option, where, when and if to convert over-the-road cargo to intermodal, what inland ports to use, where DCs should optimally be located and what opportunities may exist to mitigate cost by leveraging backhaul whether in trucks or containers.

FREE Webcast: Canadian Trade Editorial Webcast-TBD

Canada’s economy — like that of the United States — has undergone a choppy recovery since the Great Recession. But the good news is that international trade volumes are on the rise. Canada’s four main container ports — Montreal, Halifax, Vancouver, and Prince Rupert — handle different levels of cargo for domestic Canadian consumption, combined with being entry points for cargo to the U.S. market, creating unique supply chain challenges while offering shippers and carriers alternatives to U.S. ports. Intermodal rail continues to be a fundamental mode for moving international cargo within Canada and North America overall, and the country’s two main railroads — Canadian National and Canadian Pacific — have a vast interconnected network serving Canadian east-west markets and the U.S. Midwest. That’s also true for vibrant north-south cross-border trade with the U.S. With more than 70 percent of Canada’s 34 million people living within 100 miles of the U.S. border, the movement of cargo and people across this border is a fact of life for Canadian business, especially the international sector.

This webcast will analyze the U.S.-Canada trade and cross-border trucking relationship, the growth of Canada’s ports, especially the controversial Prince Rupert and the challenges shippers face when doing business with Canada.

FREE Webcast: Global Logistics Focus Editorial Webcast-TBD

Global supply chain interests have endured monumental change over the past four years. The worst recession in decades required third-party logistics providers and other supply chain interests to dramatically change their business models as retailers slashed inventories, adopted revolutionary environmental initiatives and slashed costs. The environmental pressure has been equally strong — if not stronger — among federal, state and local governments, part of a new regulatory environment that is challenging companies up and down the global supply chain. Internationally, supply chains are as long as ever, but the debate over near-sourcing is accelerating as fuel prices surge. Amid all the changes, technology providers are rushing out new products to help companies navigate the regulatory and trade minefield.

This webcast, timed in the aftermath of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ Annual Global Conference, will analyze the state of global supply chains, how 3PLs are responding to ever-growing customer needs and new technology services that aim to boost supply chain efficiency.

FREE Webcast: Asia-Europe Trade -TBD

One of the largest trade lanes in the world, the Asia-Europe market is struggling under the weight of Europe’s fiscal and economic crisis. It couldn’t come at a worse time for ocean carriers that are taking delivery of a slew of new, large container ships ordered before the crisis. With the biggest of these ships being deployed in the Asia-Europe trade, where ports have the infrastructure in place to handle them, carriers face a daunting capacity challenge: There’s too much of it, and that’s putting severe downward pressure on freight rates. The story is much the same on the air cargo side, if not worse.

This webcast will analyze this critical trade for ocean and air carriers, what they’re doing to manage the market, and when they and their customers can expect improvement in Europe.

FREE Webcast: Global Maritime Forecast -TBD

Uncertainty is the new normal in the global shipping market. After storming back from the 2008-09 recession in 2010, ocean carriers spent much of the past two years fending off the dreaded “o” word — overcapacity — as shipyards delivered a slew of giant new ships. Although the growth in the shipping fleet has exceeded the growth in global trade, carriers are coping with the imbalance by carefully managing operations — withholding some capacity, partnering with other carriers or outright stopping some services. Doing so has allowed them to stabilize rates, but pressure, especially in the Asia-Europe trade, is building. But with forecasts largely seeing economic improvement for late this year and into 2014, the fortunes for carriers and the shippers they rely on, appear to be improving.

This webcast will analyze the state of the global container shipping market, with an eye toward 2014 and what the industry can expect in the way of growth.

Global supply chain interests have endured monumental change over the past three years. The worst recession in decades required third-party logistics providers and other supply chain interests to dramatically change their business models as retailers slashed inventories, adopted revolutionary environmental initiatives and cut costs. The environmental pressure has been equally strong — if not stronger — among federal, state and local governments, part of a new regulatory environment that is challenging companies up and down the global supply chain. Internationally, supply chains are as long as ever, but the debate over near-sourcing is accelerating as fuel prices surge and disruptive forces such as natural disasters and longshore labor actions increase the risk for traditional supply chains and make them more difficult to manage.

This webcast will analyze the state of global supply chains, how 3PLs are responding to ever-growing customer needs and new technology services that aim to boost supply chain efficiency. A centerpiece of the event will be discussion about the Top 40 Global Logistics Companies based on 2012 revenue, with analysis of how the world’s largest 3PLs are adapting to an ever-changing transportation and trade world.

Timed in the aftermath of The Journal of Commerce’s 13th Annual Trans-Pacific Maritime Conference, this webcast will focus on the supply and demand of container space in the trans-Pacific trade, the economic fundamentals driving it and what it means for intermodal rail, industrial real estate and other segments of the supply chain. Coming off the roller-coaster ride of 2012’s extreme rate swings — when pricing started slowly, ramped up rapidly through midyear and then fell off at the end — shippers and carriers are searching for stability. The big test for carriers this year is whether they’ll be able to manage vessel capacity in a way that limits the effect of the huge amount of new ships scheduled to be delivered this year. The true measure of that test will come just before summer, when shippers and carriers wrap up annual service contracts that could trend increasingly toward longer-term deals and indexed-based agreements that would instill the very stability so many seek.

This webcast will examine the economic and market indicators that will define business in the trans-Pacific container trades in 2013 — from economic and sourcing trends in China, import demand in the United States and the outlook for retail and other container shipping-relevant products.

The cautious optimism prevailing among third-party logistics providers since the Great Recession is slowly becoming less cautious as growth in emerging markets — and a hoped-for economic recovery in the U.S. and Europe — is driving companies to expand globally. To keep up, 3PLs are investing in supply chain technologies, training and human resources. To be viable end-to-end providers, they must be flexible and transparent, and capable of integrating with multiple supply chain partners.

This webcast will look at the various components of the international supply chain — growing overseas markets and the outlook at home; technology; and warehousing — and analyze the threats and opportunities for each in the year ahead.

Maritime and trucking shippers are heading on divergent paths. While growth in capacity has outpaced growth in demand on the ocean side — and will again in 2013 — trucking companies are displaying restraint, choosing to manage capacity and shed money-losing freight. As 2013 begins, however, both transportation modes face their share of risks: a stuttering U.S. economy, recession in Europe, economic slowing in Asia, potentially restrictive new U.S. regulations and high fuel costs.

This webcast will analyze the issues, challenges and opportunities that will help define the year ahead for trucking and ocean carriers, and the shippers who use them.
