James L. Welch is resigning as CEO of Dynamex, leaving the former YRC executive free to rejoin the trucking company in place of retiring chief William D. Zollars.
Dynamex parent Transforce announced Welch’s resignation Thursday, and said it would be effective July 22 — the day YRC completes its financial restructuring.
That set off new speculation that Welch, the former president of Yellow Transportation with a long career at Yellow, would replace Zollars.
Zollars said he would retire once the financial restructuring is complete.
Satish Jindel of SJ Consulting Group identified Welch as a prime candidate for the CEO seat at YRC Worldwide in a recent column in The Journal of Commerce.
Welch led Yellow Transportation, now YRC Inc., from 2000 to 2007 before leaving to become president and CEO of Dynamex, a same-day carrier in the U.S. and Canada.
He oversaw the sale of Dynamex to TransForce last year.
