Werner Enterprises' Profit Dropped 12 Percent in Fourth Quarter

Trucking company Werner Enterprises reported its profit in the fourth quarter of 2012 was $26.0 million, dropping 12 percent from $29.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Quarterly revenue was $509.7 million, up slightly from $507.9 million in the same quarter the previous year. The company averaged 7,156 trucks in service in the fourth quarter and ended the quarter with 7,150 trucks, which was a 40-truck increase from the end of the third quarter of 2012.

Freight demand was softer in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to the relatively strong demand experienced in the fourth quarter of 2011, Werner Enterprises said in a written statement. Freight trends in 2013 have thus far followed typical seasonal patterns, the company added.

For the full year of 2012, profit was $103.0 million, basically stable compared with $102.8 million in 2011. Revenue in 2012 rose 2 percent year-over-year to $2.0 billion.
