Universal Truckload Services is an asset-light provider of customized transportation and logistics solutions that offers services in transportation, value-added, intermodal and specialized services. A  public company since 2005 with headquarters in Warren, Michigan, the company reported 2013 revenue of $1.03 billion, up 0.3 percent year-over-year, and net income of $50.6 million, up from $47.7 million the year before.

Universal Truckload Services and its subsidiaries — Westport Axle, Cavalry Logistics, Great American Lines, LINC, Louisiana Transportation, The Mason and Dixon Lines, Intermodal Services, Am-Can, and Logistics Solutions — employ more than 8,500 individuals and operate more than 90 terminals and logistics centers in North America. The truckload carrier provides services for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, with a fleet of 2,500 flatbed trailers, 3,200 dry van trailers, and 47 refrigerated vans.

Westport Axle is the newest addition to the Universal family, recently acquired from a Brazil-based industrial group. Based in Louisville, Ky., Westport provides warehousing and component distribution services to U.S. manufacturers of Classes 4-8 trucks, recreational vehicles and super duty trucks, and also manufactures and distributes steering knuckles and axle components for the automotive industry.

Weak demand for energy and steel products sapped loads from the flatbed trailers operated by Universal Truckload Services in the fourth quarter, pulling transportation revenue down 9.1 percent to $177.5 million, the trucking and logistics company said Thursday.
