Roadrunner Transportation Systems has acquired Central Cal Transportation, an intermodal hauler in Northern California, for $4 million. The acquisition is the latest in a string of buyouts by Roadrunner aimed at expanding its truckload and drayage business.
Central Cal primarily hauls nuts, wine and retail imports from the West Coast, with about $19 million in total revenue over the last 12 months, according to Roadrunner. The Fresno, Calif.-based company was founded in 1995.
The acquisition "substantially enhances the scale and critical mass of our drayage operations in the West Coast region," said Mark DiBlasi, president and CEO of Cudahy, Wis.-based Roadrunner, a $768 million company.
"The seasonality of Central Cal's freight mix complements our existing intermodal business, which we believe will enhance our driver utilization and retention."
