A resurgent economy kickstarted growth at the Top 50 U.S. Trucking Companies in 2014, pushing their combined revenue up by 10 percent to $117 billion. Half the companies in the Top 50 rankings, prepared for JOC.com by SJ Consulting Group, now have more than $1 billion in revenue, compared with 12 in 2003. The Top 50 growth rate last year nearly doubled from 5.5 percent in 2013 and 6 percent in 2012 and is the third-best performance for the group, after 2004 and 2011.

The steep drop in fuel prices year-over-year and over the summer is driving fuel surcharges down, reducing overall spot market truck rates and putting pressure on intermodal pricing, too. DAT saw spot truck rates drop by a penny last week, although line-haul rates were unchanged, thanks to lower surcharges.

Commentary

J.B. Hunt grew its top line revenue by 10.4 percent in 2014 from 2013. While this mark may not be noteworthy by itself, what is unique is that this marks the fifth consecutive year J.B. Hunt increased its revenue by double digits. Only two other companies in SJ Consulting Group’s Top 50 Trucking Companies list have achieved the same feat: Kenan Advantage Group and Roadrunner, although the manner at which they went about this growth is very different.
