Top 40 Container Carriers

2015 was a roller-coaster for ocean container carriers operating in the U.S. trades, and it wasn’t just because of record low freight rates. 

In the aftermath of the West Coast labor debacle — and all the cross-border diversions, air cargo routing and alternative sourcing remedies that came with it — ocean carrier results for 2015 were mixed, with 19 of the JOC Top 40 ship lines moving goods in the U.S. trades posting volume declines. Separately, 21 of the JOC Top 40 U.S. export container carriers and 15 of the JOC Top 40 U.S. import container carriers posted declines in volume.

As of April 1, 2015, Alphaliner calculates current active total liner trade TEU capacity was at 19,191,800 TEUs aboard 5,979 ships, including 18,748,980 TEUs aboard 5,061 fully cellular ships. Year-over-year, that's 7 percent or 1,253,007 TEUs more in active liner capacity, while netting 28 more ships in the fleet. Since Dec. 1, 2014, 2.3 percent or 424,290 TEUs in active liner capacity were added, while netting one more ship in the fleet.
