Midwest Flooding

Seven barges rest against the Marseilles Dam, Marseilles, Ill., after the motor vessel Dale A. Heller lost control of its tow on April 18, due to strong river currents from heavy rainfall.

Weeks of heavy precipitation have led to swollen rivers and extensive flooding in the midwestern United States, just a few short months after low water levels threatened navigation. Locks and bridges have been closed, disrupting transportation networks and leading to delays.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for the Illinois, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, among others, and further inclement weather remains possible.
