New Zealand Proposes Removal of Shipping Antitrust Exemption

New Zealand has submitted proposals to the Global Shippers’ Forum, representing the freight transportation industry, to withdraw antitrust immunity for international shipping services and transition to a normal competition regime governed by the nation’s Commerce Act 1986.

The recommendations were originally submitted to the New Zealand Productivity Commission in April, and the minister of commerce asked the parliament’s Commerce Committee to consider the proposals in September.

GSF Secretary General Chris Welsh said the Commerce Act has sufficient safeguards to provide flexibility for international shipping lines to collaborate in order to provide maximum capacity and frequency of services to and from New Zealand.
