Genesee & Wyoming Traffic Slips

Freight rail company Genesee & Wyoming reported September traffic of 79,239 carloads, down 5.2 percent year-over-year. The 242,783 carloads it hauled in the third quarter also were down 5.2 percent year-over-year.

Shipments of coal and coke, minerals and stone, metals, farm and food products and other commodities fell year-over-year in September and the third quarter.

Shipments of pulp and paper, lumber and forest products, metallic ores, petroleum products and auto and auto parts increased year-over-year in the month and quarter.

September intermodal traffic on the short line rail operator was 6,187 units, up 15 percent from September 2011's 5,381 units. Third quarter throughput was 17,754, up 12.1 percent from 15,833 units a year earlier.
