Railroad, state investing $11 million, part of Crescent Corridor stack plan

Norfolk Southern Railway and Pennsylvania’s state government will spend $11 million to expand track and parking in the railroad’s Philadelphia Navy Yard intermodal facility.

Charles W. Moorman, the company’s chairman, president and CEO, said the expansion “is critical to the success of our Crescent Corridor” – a long-term, multi-state construction plan to add facilities or expand capacity for double-stack container trains from the Mississippi River Delta to the industrial Northeast.

NS will spend $6 million on its Philadelphia yard project, while the state contributes $5 million. Construction will begin about the middle of next year.

Moorman said the facility is strategically located for the markets of southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.
