The Intermodal Association of North America today reported that overall intermodal volume in the third quarter was 3.77 million units, up 3.2 percent from last year’s third-quarter total of 3.65 million.
IANA’s report “Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics” also revealed that quarterly domestic intermodal container volume was 1.41 million units, jumping 11.3 percent from 1.27 million in the third quarter of 2011. Every IANA region posted increases in domestic containers, with the largest increases in the Midwest and Northeast.
Trailer volume dropped 10.7 percent, from 0.42 million in the third quarter of last year to 0.38 million in the third quarter of this year.
Quarterly international volume was 1.98 million, remaining relatively stable with a 0.9 percent increase year-over-year.
