CN Plans Calgary Logistics Park

Canadian National Railway plans to invest about $94 million to develop a logistics park northeast of Calgary, Alberta, and transfer into it most of the operations now at its southeast Calgary rail yard when the site opens in 2013.

CN said it plans for the 680-acre area “to include a state-of-the-art intermodal terminal with room for customers to co-locate with CN and custom build their facility in place.”

The logistics park will also be designed for commodity transload and warehouse facilities, an automotive compound and a liquid-bulk distribution area. The site is a few miles east of the Calgary Airport.

Claude Mongeau, CN president and CEO, said the Calgary plan “is part of our program to grow a network of logistics parks that provide seamless and efficient transportation and distribution capabilities for customers, linking their facilities across North America.”

The project is subject to regulatory approval, environmental review and public consultation. Although CN plans to shift its yard operations to the new site, the company said it will continue to provide rail service to customers along its existing lines at Calgary.
