When the Los Angeles City Council on May 8 approved the final environmental impact report for construction of BNSF Railway’s $500 million near-dock intermodal yard in Southern California, the approval proved to be the beginning of a journey rather than the end of a saga.
BNSF Railway
BNSF Railway is one of the U.S. Class I railroads serving especially the western half of the country, with a rail network of 32,500 route miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces and nearly 40,000 employees. In 2012, the railroad handled 4.7 million intermodal shipments, as well as large amounts of agricultural products, coal, and industrial goods.
The Fort Worth, Texas-based railroad was created in 1995 from the merger of Burlington Northern Inc. (parent of Burlington Northern Railroad) and Santa Fe Pacific Corp. (parent of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway). BNSF became a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., in 2010.
