BNSF, CSX Add to Container Service

Carriers add more Southeast locations to shared intermodal program

Cross-country intermodal partners BNSF Railway in the West and CSX Intermodal in the East recently expanded their container service to more Southeast cities.

They already have eastern hubs at Atlanta, Jacksonville, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C. Now, they said also run the service into Charleston, S.C., Savannah, Ga., and Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Fla.

They built the shared container service after a 2006 agreement between the two rail operations to improve service between the West Coast and Atlanta plus other Southeast destinations.

That network competes some with connections between Union Pacific Railway in the West and Norfolk Southern Railway in the East, which hook up through the Meridian Speedway corridor that connects them on lines owned by Kansas City Southern.

“BNSF and CSX expanded their original program because it proved to be very successful for both us and shippers,” said Steve Branscum, group vice president for consumer products at BNSF.
