TRAC Intermodal, the United States’ largest provider of intermodal chassis, plans to extend its services into drayage, said CEO Keith Lovetro.
“We’ll be dipping our toe in the water this year,” Lovetro said in an interview at the JOC’s TPM 2014 conference. “We’ll begin to solicit bids and receive proposals, and start it.”
TRAC has had a trucking service to reposition its own chassis since mid-2012. Offering a drayage service seems a logical way to turn an expense item into a revenue producer, Lovetro said.
He said the planned move into drayage meshes with the desire of ocean carriers to get out of “last-mile” delivery.
TRAC isn’t ready to discuss details, including where the service will begin. Lovetro said the service will use owner-operator drivers, as TRAC’s existing chassis-repositioning service does.
Lovetro said TRAC is sensitive to any perception that might be competing with trucking customers, and will move carefully to avoid friction with motor carriers.
