The U.K. has issued the highest possible security alert to British shipping companies operating off the coast of Yemen, according to an expert, BigPond News reports.
Neil Roberts, a senior insurance underwriter at Lloyd’s Market Association, told a BigPond News reporter that the U.K. Department for Transport issued a “level three” warning about Yemen, amid a worldwide terror alert focused on the Middle Eastern nation. “Level three” is considering “exceptional,” suggesting a “probable or imminent risk of a security incident,” according to the International Ship and Port Facility Security.
“This is a wakeup call for British shipowners that the risk has increased significantly,” Roberts said.
The U.K. and the U.S. have withdrawn all staff from embassies in Yemen, following concerns about a possible al-Qaida attack.
