CK Commercial Vehicle Research’s latest Fleet Sentiment Report predicted increased activity for Class 8 truck orders in the third quarter of 2013.
The FSR Buying Index, which captures overall planned buying activity for the next three months, reached 95.2 for the third quarter, down 2 percent from the second quarter of 2013, but up 9 percent from the third quarter of 2012.
The report, which surveyed 48 U.S. fleet operators in late July, showed that 65 percent of fleet executives plan to place orders for Class 8 trucks in the next three months, representing a 53 percent increase compared with the second quarter survey in April. Although the estimated size of those orders was down quarter-over-quarter, it was higher year-over-year, representing 6.1 percent of participants’ inventory in the third quarter, versus 1.4 percent in the third quarter of 2012.
Conversely, expected quarterly trailer order activity was down quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year.
