Trans-Pacific eastbound rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai rose fin the week of Aug. 1 for the second straight week, according to the latest release of the World Container Index. Westbound rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai saw little movement in July.
The Europe-to-Asia eastbound rate from Rotterdam to Shanghai increased 2.2 percent or $20 per 40-foot container in the week of Aug. 1, following a 1.7 percent increase in the prior week, putting it at $911 per FEU. This was the largest week-to-week increase since March 7. Since July 4, the rate rose 3 percent or $27. However, the current rate is still down 2.7 percent or $25 from the beginning of the year and down 11.2 percent year-over-year.
For the week of Aug. 1, the westbound trans-Pacific lane from Los Angeles to Shanghai edged down 0.6 percent or $5 to $893. The rate had been flat for the prior three weeks. The current rate is 2.2 percent or $19 higher than it was at the beginning of the year and 5.8 percent higher year-over-year.
