Trans-Atlantic rates between New York and Rotterdam declined in both directions during July 2013. The eastbound rate from New York to Rotterdam lost much more than the $44 it had previously gained from the July 1 GRI of between $150 and $200 per 40-foot container by Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd.
Eastbound rates from New York to Rotterdam fell 6.5 percent or $105 from July 4 to $1,522 per FEU, according to the latest release of the World Container Index. This is the lowest rate in this lane since the JOC began collecting this data in June 2011. During the past month, rates remained mostly flat for three of the four weeks. The major drop took place during the week of July 25. The current rate is down 27.4 percent year-over-year and 21.5 percent or $418 from the beginning of 2013.
The westbound trans-Atlantic rate from Rotterdam to New York slipped 2 percent or $37 in July to $1,928 per FEU. The rate increased slightly in three of the four weeks in July, but not enough to overcome the 3.6 percent or $71 drop in the week of July 25. The rate on Aug. 1 is down 21 percent or $515 from the beginning of 2013 and down 27.4 percent year-over-year.
