Air cargo imports handled by Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd. declined year-over-year in June, falling 15 percent to 49.4 million kilograms from 58 million in June 2012. Overall air cargo volume fell 3.2 percent as a result, to 169.4 million kilograms.
The overall import tonnage was 9.7 percent lower than in May. Imports in the first half year of 2013 totaled 310 million kilograms and were down 2 percent year-over-year. Steep declines in June imports were seen from many regions, but the two regions with the largest decreases were the Southwest Pacific, which fell 45.6 percent year-over-year to 1 million kilograms of imports, and South Asia, which dropped 43 percent to 885,000 kilograms. Imports from the Southwest Pacific region have experienced double-digit declines at an accelerating rate for the past four months, while South Asia has seen double-digit drops for the past five.
Hactl handled 120 million kilograms of exports in June, up 2.5 percent year-over-year, but down 1.3 percent from May. This is the third straight year-over-year increase in exports, although May’s increase was very slight. The largest regional change in exports was a 13.7 percent jump in cargo carried to North America, reaching 33.9 million kilograms from 29.8 million. Exports in the first six months of 2013 totaled 683.8 million kilograms, down 0.6 percent year-over-year.
