The 7,041-TEU, Bahamas-flag MOL Comfort snapped in half on June 17 during inclement weather in the Indian Ocean, while it was en route from Singapore to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, about 200 nautical miles from Yemen. The aft part of the vessel later sank in the open sea in the Indian Ocean, after weather conditions prevented towing. Rescue boats started arriving to salvage the fore part on June 24.
MOL said the fore part is now located near 17’14”N 68’48”E. Although the weather in that area is still adverse, MOL confirmed that the condition of the fore part is stable with the majority of its cargo aboard. The container line again verified that there is no oil film around the fore part at present.
