Maher Terminals reported a “system outage” temporarily interrupted traffic at its Port of New York and New Jersey terminal this morning, resulting in heavy backups of trucks.
The port authority said trucks were being allowed into the port only from northbound lanes of the road into the terminal. By mid-morning the truck line stretched to the New Jersey Turnpike approximately two miles away.
Maher has battled operational issues following the launch of a new terminal operating system earlier this month. Nine ship calls were subcontracted to other terminals, and truckers and terminal officials said traffic flow improved last week.
The terminal extended free time and waived demurrage through last week, and offered truckers credit on two hours of detention credit for waiting time outside the terminal. Gate hours are operating on an extended schedule of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. this week.
