Deutsche Bahn and Bombardier Transportation have signed a frame contract for the delivery of up to 450 electric locomotives by the year 2020.
Deutsche Bahn, a German railway company, has already placed an order for 110 locomotives for DB Schenker, its logistics arm, and 20 for DB Regio, which operates passenger trains in Germany, from Bombardier Transportation, a Canadian train manufacturer. Based on the list price, the value of the 130 locomotives would be $573 million.
The total potential contract value is up to $2 billion, although the contract allows for numerous variations and technical options.
DB’s locomotive fleet already includes more than 700 Bombardier TRAXX locomotives that have hauled freight and passengers for more than 10 years. The locomotives in the frame contract represent a further development of the TRAXX locomotive platform already in operation. TRAXX trains are designed for speeds of up to 160 kph (about 99 mph).
