Containerized exports from Far East Asia to North America saw significant month-to-month and year-over-year jumps in March 2013, according to data from Container Trades Statistics, Ltd. Of the past four months, three have shown increases over the same month of the year prior.
Far East Asia to Australia/Oceania
Far East Asia exported 146,600 20-foot-equivalent units to Australasia and Oceania in March 2013. The trade experienced its first year-over-year drop since the JOC began collecting this data in 2011. March’s export volume from Far East Asia was down 3.2 percent from March 2012 but was 6.3 percent higher than the month before. Far East Asia exported 454,400 TEUs to the region through March 2013, 10.4 percent more than the same period in 2012. The Far East Asia-Australasia/Oceania price index remained at 91 for a second straight month in March.
Far East Asia to Europe
Exports from Far East Asia to Europe slumped 7.2 percent year-over-year to 1,078,000 TEUs in March 2013. However, the export volume climbed over 17 percent from February. In the first three months of 2013, exports from Far East Asia to Europe declined 1.4 percent year-over-year, at 3,293,700 TEUs. The CTS index of rates in this trade fell 4 points to 78 in March.
Far East Asia to Indian Subcontinent/Middle East
Containerized trade from Far East Asia to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East slipped 3 percent year-over-year to 634,800 TEUs in March 2013 from March 2012, but jumped 31.5 percent compared to a weak February. This is the second consecutive month of yearly declines in this lane. Exports from Far East Asia to the region in the first three months of 2013 totaled 1,757,200 TEUs, inching up 0.9 percent over the same period in 2012. The CTS price index remained at 79 in March.
Far East Asia to North America
Containerized trade from Far East Asia to North America climbed 13 percent year-over-year to 1,274,700 TEUs in March 2013. The volume was also over 31 percent higher than the level seen in February. Exports from Far East Asia in this lane through March 2013 increased 6.6 percent year-over-year to 3,709,600 TEUs. The CTS index fell from 101 in February to 97 in March.
Far East Asia to South/Central America
Far East Asia exported 309,800 TEUS to South and Central America in March 2013, which was 2.7 percent fewer TEUs than were exported in March 2012 but 25 percent more than the level seen in February 2013. In the first three months of 2013, exports from Far East Asia in this lane increased 2.3 percent year-over-year to 888,800 TEUs. Rates in this market as indexed by CTS dropped 4 points to 80 in March.
Far East Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa
Containerized trade was up 5.7 percent year-over-year in March 2013 at 269,500 TEUs, compared with March 2012’s export volume of 255,000. This was the only region to experience a year-over-year increase in imports from Far East Asia in March besides North America. Volume was also up over 35 percent month-to-month from February. Exports through March totaled 756,200 TEUs so far this year, up 10.7 percent from the same period in 2012. Rates in this market as indexed by CTS fell two points to 77.
