Sunship Schiffahrtskontor KG has confirmed that all of its five crew members who were abducted during the boarding of its container ship City of Xiamen off the coast of Nigeria on April 26 have been released.
The International Maritime Bureau said 14 heavily armed pirates attacked the ship, breaching its citadel, according to Reuters. They took the crew members captive before escaping with cash taken from the ship and the crew, the IMB said in a piracy report.
After their release, all of the crew members, who are Polish and Russian citizens, were looked after by representatives of the German ship operator in Nigeria and were undergoing medical checkups. Despite difficult conditions in captivity, they are in good health and have already returned to their own countries, Sunship reports.
Sunship recognized Nigerian local authorities, the embassies of Poland and the Russian Federation in Nigeria and the German Bundespolizei for their help in securing the release of the crew.
