With Mother’s Day just a few days away, logistics companies in the U.S. are ramping up operations to prepare for extra holiday-related shipments:
FedEx plans to handle more than 2 million e-commerce shipments containing fresh flower bouquets, hand-dipped chocolates and other Mother’s Day gifts to be delivered to moms around the U.S. between May 6 and May 12, with large numbers of shipments being sorted in Memphis, Tenn.; Indianapolis; Oakland, Calif.; and Newark, N.J. More than 1 million of these shipments will travel through the FedEx Ground network.
According to the National Retail Federation, almost 30 percent of consumers planned to purchase their Mother’s Day gifts online this year.
Meanwhile, CrowleyFresh expects to handle nearly 100,000 boxes of flowers through its 400,000 cubic foot warehouse by Mother’s Day on May 12.
The Miami cold storage warehouse and perishables handling operation is helping the local Sunshine Flowers company prepare for the holiday by delivering fresh flowers via refrigerated trucks using insulated pallets. The flowers are delivered to supermarkets on an as-needed basis, in time for the holiday rush. At the start of the week, there were about 34,600 boxes of flowers being handled and stored in CrowleyFresh’s temperature-controlled coolers.
UPS will implement operational adjustments for Saturday, May 11, in anticipation of heavy holiday-related shipping volume. On that day, UPS will relax its UPS Next Day Air delivery commitment time by 90 minutes. For areas that normally have a noon or 1:30 p.m. commitment time on Saturday, deliveries will be made by 1:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. respectively. However, the commitment time for UPS Next Day Air Early A.M. deliveries on that day will remain unchanged.
