IAG Cargo will be expanding its per-plane capacity when it adds at least 18 Airbus A350-1000s to its fleet beginning in 2018, subject to shareholder approval.
These planes have three more pallets of cargo space apiece, providing for a maximum payload of about 30 metric tons, IAG said. In addition, the cargo bays are air conditioned, which should improve conditions for handling temperature-sensitive air freight such as pharmaceuticals.
The A350-1000 order is part of IAG’s wider fleet modernization program, which also includes an order for 24 Boeing 787s and an option for 18 more, which the air cargo carrier plans to convert into firm orders. It has options for 18 more Airbus A350-1000s as well.
