Trans-Atlantic eastbound rates fell for the first time in six weeks, according to the latest release of the World Container Index. Rates were flat last week after rising 11.2 percent or $175 over the previous four weeks.
This week's rate from New York to Rotterdam dropped 6 percent or $102 from last week to $1,640 per 40-foot container, and is down 15.5 percent or $300 from the beginning of 2013 and 20.4 percent year-over-year. This is the first drop since a proposed GRI of between $200 and $300 on April 1 that had achieved $175 in its first four weeks.
The trans-Atlantic westbound lane from Rotterdam to New York remained at $2,093 per FEU for a second week. The current rate for the week of May 2 is down 17.4 percent year-over-year and 14.3 percent or $350 from the beginning of 2013. There hasn’t been an increase in this lane’s rate in eight weeks.
