Containerized export volume from Europe to the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East extended its year-over-year slump to a fifth consecutive month in February 2013, according to data from Container Trades Statistics, Ltd.
Europe to Far East Asia
Europe exported 535,100 20-foot-equivalent units to Far East Asia in February 2013, up 0.5 percent from February 2012 and 3.4 percent higher than January 2013, when it exported 517,700 TEUs. In the first two months of 2013, European exports to Far East Asia fell by almost 4 percent year-over-year to 1,052,800 TEUs. The index rate in this market as tracked by CTS fell 3 points to 93 in February.
Europe to Australasia/Oceania
Exports from Europe to Australasia/Oceania fell 1.6 percent year-over-year and 6 percent month-to-month to 37,600 TEUs in February 2013. This was the first year-over-year drop in this trade lane since May 2012. In January and February of this year, exports from Europe to Australasia/Oceania edged up 0.8 percent year-over-year, to 77,600 TEUs. The CTS index of rates in this trade lane fell 2 points to 90 in February.
Europe to the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East
Containerized trade from Europe to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East declined for the fifth straight month in February to 235,900 TEUs, down 3.6 percent compared with the level in February 2012, but 12.6 percent higher than the level seen in January 2013. Exports from Europe in this lane during the first two months of 2013 declined 6.5 percent year-over-year to 445,400 TEUs. The CTS index fell from 98 in January to 96 in February.
Europe to North America
Containerized trade in this lane edged down 0.2 percent year-over-year to 288,500 TEUs in February 2013, but jumped 11.3 percent compared with January’s volume. Exports from Europe during this January and February totaled 547,700 TEUs, 0.4 percent below the level seen in 2012. The CTS price index dropped 1 point to 89 in February.
Europe to South/Central America
Europe exported 120,600 TEUs to South and Central America in February 2013, down 0.2 percent from the level seen in February 2012, but up 3 percent from January 2013. In the first two months of 2013, exports from Europe inched up 0.8 percent year-over-year to 237,700 TEUs. The index rate in this market as tracked by CTS dropped from 110 to 109 in February.
Europe to Sub-Saharan Africa
Containerized trade jumped 10.8 percent year-over-year in February 2013 to 139,300 TEUs, compared with February 2012’s export volume of 125,700 TEUs. Volume was also up 9.2 percent month-to-month. In January and February, exports from Europe to sub-Saharan Africa grew 3.7 percent year-over-year, to 266,900 TEUs. The index rate in this market fell 1 point to 75 in February.
