The Port of Seattle reported container volume fell 30.1 percent in March compared with the same month in the previous year, and decreased 19.4 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, largely the result of the Grand Alliance’s shift to Tacoma.
The March volume was also affected by omitted sailings post Lunar New Year, the port said in a written statement.
As a region, the ports of Seattle and Tacoma were down 4.0 percent for March, but up 4.2 percent year-to-date.
Separately, the Port of Seattle’s commission has selected Stephanie Bowman to fill the seat vacated by Rob Holland. Bowman, executive director of the Washington Asset Building Coalition, is the former manager of federal government affairs at the Port of Tacoma. Her position on the commission will be on the King County ballot in November, when voters will elect a commissioner to serve a full four-year term.
