CMA CGM’s Alexander von Humboldt container ship today began its maiden voyage in Busan, South Korea.
Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in South Korea and owned by CMA CGM, the U.K.-flag ship is 396 meters (about 1,299 feet) long and 177 feet wide with a draft of 52 feet.
It is the second of a series of 16,000 20-foot-equivalent unit vessels to be named after famous explorers. Delivery of the third vessel of the series, Jules Verne, which will sail under the French flag, is expected in the beginning of May 2013.
Alexander Von Humboldt will be employed on the French Asia Line, a fixed-day, weekly connection between China and North Europe. The ship will be christened on May 30 in Hamburg, Germany.
