Containerized exports from Far East Asia to Australasia/Oceania increased almost 20 percent in February 2013 over the same month in 2012, according to data from Container Trades Statistics, Ltd. This trade lane has experienced significant growth for more than a year. All lanes saw declines from January, reflecting the impact of the late Chinese New Year holiday.
Far East Asia to Australia/Oceania
Far East Asia exported 137,800 20-foot-equivalent units to Australasia and Oceania in February 2013, which despite its large year-over-year growth was 19 percent lower than the month before. Far East Asia has exported 307,700 TEUs through February 2013, which is 18.3 percent more than the same period in 2012. The Far East Asia-Australasia/Oceania price index fell by one point to 91 in February.
Far East Asia to Europe
Exports from Far East Asia to Europe inched up 0.4 percent year-over-year to 915,100 TEUs in February 2013. However, the export volume fell almost 30 percent from January. In the first two months of 2013, exports from Far East Asia to Europe grew 1.6 percent year-over-year, to 2,212,200 TEUs. The CTS index of rates in this trade remained at 82 in February.
Far East Asia to Indian Subcontinent/Middle East
Containerized trade from Far East Asia to the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East slipped 4.5 percent year-over-year to 482,500 TEUs in February 2013 from February 2012, when export volume was 505,500 TEUs, and was also down 24.6 percent compared to January 2013. Exports from Far East Asia in the first two months of 2013 totaled 1,122,000 TEUs, up 3.2 percent over the same period in 2012. The CTS price index rose two points to 79 in February.
Far East Asia to North America
Containerized trade from Far East Asia to North America fell 3.5 percent year-over-year to 970,700 TEUs in February 2013. The volume was also 33.7 percent lower than the level seen in January. Exports from Far East Asia in this lane in the first two months of 2013 increased 3.6 percent year-over-year to 2,434,800 TEUs. The CTS index rose from 99 in January to 101 in February.
Far East Asia to South/Central America
Far East Asia exported 235,200 TEUS to South and Central America in February 2013, which was 2.3 percent fewer TEUs than were exported in February 2012 and 25.3 percent less than the level seen in January 2013. In the first two months of 2013, exports from Far East Asia in this lane inched down 0.1 percent year-over-year to 550,200 TEUs. Rates in this market as tracked by CTS dropped two points to 84 in February.
Far East Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa
Containerized trade was up 7.6 percent year-over-year in February 2013 at 198,900 TEUs, compared with February 2012’s export volume of 184,900. However, it was down 31 percent month-to-month from January. Exports from this January and February totaled 486,800 TEUs, up 13.7 percent from the same period in 2012. Rates in this market as tracked by CTS fell one point to 79.
