The Port of New Orleans’ containerized throughput fell 14.7 percent year-over-year in February.
Total volume in February 2013 was 32,443 20-foot-equivalent units, including both laden and empty containers, according to data from the port.
New Orleans’ exports dropped 5.6 percent year-over-year to 17,165 TEUs in February. Exports were down 9.7 percent from January 2013, whose total was 19,017 TEUs. This is the fifth straight month of year-over-year declines for exports. Container imports in February totaled 15,278 TEUs, down 23 percent from the level seen in February 2012 and 28.7 percent from the 21,440 TEUs reported in January.
In 2012, exports fell to 225,859 TEUs, down 4.4 percent from 2011, and imports edged down 1.5 percent to 237,291, putting the year’s throughput down 3 percent from that seen 2011. Year-to-date, the total throughput is 72,900 TEUs, down 9.28 percent from the volume in the first two months of 2012.
