Backhaul eastbound Europe-to-Asia rates dropped by 1.1 percent this week while trans-Pacific westbound lanes remained steady for a third week, according to the latest release of the World Container Index.

Europe-to-Asia eastbound rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai fell $12 to $1,061 per 40-foot container this week. Despite the drop, they are up 13.4 percent or $125 since the beginning of the year. They are up 96.1 percent year-over-year, which is the first drop below triple-digit year-to-year growth since January 3.
Trans-Pacific westbound rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai were stable for the third week, at $946 per FEU. The rate remains up 8.2 percent or $72 since the beginning of the year and 1.9 percent higher than it was at the same point a year earlier.
These lanes have seen little movement for the past eight months, aside from sporadic modest swings. Eastbound rates have shown slightly more fluctuation week to week but overall are only 3.4 percent higher than they were at the beginning of August. Westbound rates are up by 12.1 percent.
