The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has awarded a $41.4 million contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. to deepen to 50 feet the Arthur Kill channel, which separates Staten Island in New York City from New Jersey.
The contract is cost-shared with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The project includes drilling, blasting, dredging and disposal of rock.
The work is scheduled to be completed by 2014, said Tom Shea, project manager, in a written statement. The deepening of the channel coincides with the Panama Canal expansion.
