DP World’s Jebel Ali Port in the United Arab Emirates today celebrated the maiden visit of the world’s largest container ship, CMA CGM Marco Polo, a 16,020 20-foot-equivalent unit mega liner vessel owned by French shipping line CMA CGM Group.
DP World officials welcomed the ship, with Mohamed Al Muallem, senior vice president and managing director of DP World's United Arab Emirates region, presenting a commemorative plaque to the ship's master, Capt. Igor Sikic.
“Jebel Ali Port is handling an average per week of three ultra-large container ships with a capacity of 14,000 TEUs and above, and we anticipate that number will increase steadily in coming years,” Al Muallem said.
He said the port is opening a new $850 million container terminal in 2014, which will be able to handle 10 of the next generation 18,000-TEU mega vessels at the same time.
