DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali terminal in Dubai has handled a record 500,000 automobiles so far this year, 21,000 more than in the previous full-year pre-recession peak in 2008.
“This translates into almost one vehicle imported, exported or re-exported every minute of the day, 24/7,” Dubai-based DP World said.
The general cargo unit of the Jebel Ali terminal, which has 30 berths including roll on- roll off facilities, reached the half million figure in the first 49 weeks of the year.
“The record number of vehicles ... reinforces the growth message for the United Arab Emirates and the wider region that we are hearing from economic commentators such as the IMF,” said Mohammed Al Muallem, senior vice president and managing director, DP World UAE region.
The growth in general cargo traffic comes as DP World is expanding Jebel Ali’s container capacity with a new terminal that will boost total annual capacity to 19 million 20-foot equivalent units.
DP World’s UAE division handled nearly 10 million TEUs in the first nine months of the year, an increase of 4.6 percent on the same period in 2011.
