LONG BEACH — Seventeen container ships have diverted to other ports because of the strike in Los Angeles-Long Beach by the Office Clerical Unit of International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63.
The vessels have diverted to Oakland; Ensenada, Manzanillo or Mazatlan, Mexico; and Manzanillo, Panama, according to a report from the Marine Exchange of Los Angeles Long Beach Harbor that was issued on Monday.
A number of the largest carriers calling at the ports have diverted vessels since the strike began Nov. 27 at the APM Terminal in Los Angeles and spread the following day to nine other terminals that employ OCU workers.
The vessel operators that have diverted ships include Yang Ming, Hapag-Lloyd, Evergreen, China Shipping Container Line, Maersk Line, APL, China Ocean Shipping Co. and Hanjin Shipping.
Negotiators for waterfront employers and the OCU bargained throughout the weekend, and employers late Saturday presented the union with proposed changes, but the pickets remained up and cargo handling was shut down at the 10 terminals as the strike entered its second week.
Retailers, political leaders and the Harbor Trucking Association have called on both sides to break the impasse, or at least to accept mediation.
