Maersk Line is diverting container ships that were scheduled to call at the hurricane-battered Port of New York and New Jersey, which is still closed, and Charleston, which was closed during the storm, to four other East Coast ports.
The world’s largest container line, whose U.S. headquarters office in Madison, N.J. was still operating on generator power on Friday, said vessels on seven of its service were unloading import cargo originally bound for New York at Philadelphia, Norfolk, Charleston and Port Everglades.
Vessels on the following services were being diverted:
— On the MECL service, the Maersk Carolina was reversing its rotation to first call at Charleston and Newark last, when terminals there reopen. The new schedule is Charleston on Nov. 2 and Norfolk on Nov. 4.
— On the MECL service, the Maersk Iowa will arrive in Philadelphia on Nov. 2, Savannah, Nov. 4, Houston Nov. 8, and Norfolk on Nov. 12. All Newark-bound cargo will be discharged in Philadelphia.
— On the Westmed service, the Holsatia arrived in Norfolk on Nov. 1 and will arrive in Savannah on Nov. 3. All Newark-bound cargo will be discharged in Norfolk.
— On the TP3 service, the Axel Maersk will arrive in Norfolk on Nov. 3 and Savannah on Nov. 5. All Newark cargo will be discharged in Norfolk.
— On the Medgulf service, the Barcelona Express Vessel omitted its call at Charleston due to the storm. Charleston cargo was discharged in Port Everglades.
— Two ships on the TA5 service, the APL Indonesia and the MOL Destiny, discharged their Newark-bound cargo at Norfolk on Oct. 31.
Maersk said Columbia Coastal Company is advising that service is operating between Baltimore and Norfolk; however Philadelphia will be omitted. Regular service should resume next week.
CSX Transportation is advising that Boston, Norfolk and Philadelphia ramps are open, Maersk said. Efforts were being made to reopen the South Kearney ramp later Thursday, as CSX trains were not running into or out of New Jersey.
