Don Allee has resigned as executive director and CEO of the Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulfport, effective Nov. 2. The announcement was made at the Oct. 19 port commission meeting. He has served at the port for the past 11 years.
Matthew Wypyski, chief operating officer at Gulfport, will serve as the port's interim director, a port spokesperson told local reporters.
Allee has been at the center of a controversy over $570 million in federal funds that were allocated to the port following Hurricane Katrina. The funds were granted with the stipulation they would be used create jobs for low- and moderate-income residents, but port's plans to raise a pier and build an access road have been criticized for not meeting the requirement.
A spokesperson for Gov. Mick Bullock, when asked whether Allee's resignation was a result of the funds controversy, responded "that was not stated during the meeting or afterward."
