Downbeat air freight markets didn't keep Saudia Cargo from posting gains in the first six months of the year, as the largest freighter operator in the Middle East handled 251,500 tonnes of cargo, up 26 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Saudia also saw revenue increase 25 percent in the period.
Saudia has been expanding its freighter network this year with new routes to Dubai, Frankfurt, Vienna and Ho Chi Min City this year and capacity increased into Europe, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Lagos and N’Djamena.
CEO Fahad Hammad said tonnage records had been set in May and June. “The main contributors to our growth were exports from Europe, East Africa and the UAE as well as cargo from our network into Saudi Arabia and West Africa,” he said. “We expect the growth spurt to continue in the second half of 2012."
