Hub Group reported a 15 percent increase in intermodal freight volume in the first quarter, boosting its intermodal revenue 20 percent to $404 million.
Hub’s revenue net of transportation costs was $83.7 million. The Downer’s Grove, Ill.-based company’s net profit increased 30 percent to $13.7 million.
Hub Group plans to expand this year by taking more over-the-road truck freight off highways and onto intermodal rail, particularly in the Eastern U.S.
The intermodal operator’s total revenue rose 52 percent in the quarter to $740 million, powered by the acquisition of Exel Transportation a year ago.
That logistics and brokerage subsidiary, now known as Mode Transportation, had $187 million in revenue in the quarter, Hub Group said Thursday.
