Singapore Airlines is adding twice-weekly freighter service between Singapore and Frankfurt, adding Asia-Europe capacity just as a ban on night flights at Frankfurt threatens to limit service at the German airport.
SIA Cargo said it will launch the 747-400 service Nov. 2 and leave Singapore on Wednesdays and Saturdays on routes that arrive in Frankfurt the following mornings.
The flights, booked to run through next March 21, follows Lufthansa Cargo’s decision to pull some flights between Frankfurt and China and restructure services to meet a surprise court decision barring night operations at Frankfurt.
Lufthansa’s action comes at the height of the peak season for air and expedited transport and tight inventories across many industrial segments. SIA notes in its announcement that Frankfurt is a major hub for machinery and auto parts.
“These services are in line with our policy of matching capacity with demand,” said Tan Tiow Kor, senior vice president for sales and marketing. “The freighter services to Frankfurt will give our customers more choice of flights to choose from and will play an important role in expanding two-way trade links with key markets in Asia and Europe.”
