Rear Adm. Philip H. Greene Jr., superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., has stepped down amid accusations of the Maritime Administration micromanaging the school.
An announcement from the Kings Point alumni association reported Greene was appointed by the Department of Transportation Ray LaHood to the faculty of the National Defense University in Washington. The announcement gave no information about the circumstances of the departure of Greene, who was at the job less than a year.
Kings Point alumni have criticized the Marad leadership for micromanaging academy operations. The Journal of Commerce reported similar occasions of Marad leadership micromanaging in other areas.
Greene was appointed to head the academy in September 2010 after a Government Accountability Office report of financial mismanagement led to the dismissal of the previous superintendent.
