Lawmakers last week filed in the House a bill to authorize $60 million in loan guarantees for merchant ship construction under the Maritime Administration’s Title XI program.
The measure, sponsored by Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va., was the smaller part of the National Shipbuilding Budget Policy Act, which also authorizes $20 billion for Navy construction.
The Obama administration’s fiscal 2011 budget does not provide any new funds for Title XI construction. It only provides money for administration of existing loans.
