CMA CGM took delivery Tuesday of the CMA CGM Figaro, a new containership with a nominal capacity of 8,500 20-foot equivalent units, built by Samsung Heavy Industries at its shipyard in South Korea.
The CMA CGM Figaro is registered in France and will sail under the French flag on the carrier's CIMEX service from Asia to the Middle East.
CMA CGM said that, like all new vessels of this type it has ordered, the new ship is equipped with a combination of features designed to reduce its environmental impact.
The ship has a fast oil recovery system, which enables bunkers to be rapidly recovered at any time, which significantly limits the environmental consequences should there be an incident at sea.
It has an electronically controlled engine, which cuts oil consumption by 25 percent and fuel consumption by 3 percent. The new engine enables the ship to slow steam at what the company calls super eco-speed of 14 to 15 knots.
The CMA CGM Figaro has a multi-chamber waste compactor to recycle garbage on board and equipment to “cold iron” by connecting to a port’s electricity supply during operations.
The CMA CGM Figaro left the Samsung shipyard Tuesday morning en route to Tianjin, where it will be phased into the CIMEX service on the following rotation: Tianjin, Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Port Kelang, Khor Fakkan, Jebel Ali, Bandar Abbas, Port Kelang, Nansha and back to Tianjin.
