Evergreen Line and China Shipping Container Lines have agreed to pool their assets on four different trade lanes by sharing slots and vessels starting this month.
The new agreement is the latest in numerous cooperation agreements. Carriers have been announcing such pacts almost every week since the beginning of the global trade downturn as they cut capacity and share costs.
Evergreen and CSCL signed the cooperation agreement May 27 in Shanghai, China, but waited until June 1 to announce their plan.
"With the benefits of slot-sharing arrangements and joint services, we expect both Evergreen and China Shipping to see significantly upgraded service coverage and more efficiently utilized capacity on the crucial Asia-Europe and Asia-America trades as a result, so providing a better service to our customers,” said S. S. Lin, first vice group chairman of Evergreen Group, and S.D. Lee, chairman of China Shipping Container Lines, in a joint statement.
The two lines will deploy eight 8,000-TEU ships and share slots on the upgraded service from Asia to the U.S. West Coast, which Evergreen calls the HTW, and CSCL calls AAS. The first vessel on this service will be the Ever Champion sailing from Kaohsiung on June 16 on the following port rotation: Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Yantian, Los Angeles, Oakland and back to Kaohsiung.
The two carriers will deploy five 8,000-TEU ships on their service from North and Central China to the U.S. West Coast, which Evergreen designates PS, and CSCL calls the AAC. The first vessel will be Xin Ou Zhou sailing from Qingdao on June 16 on the following port rotation: Qingdao, Lian Yun Gang, Shanghai, Ningbo, Pusan, Los Angeles, Oakland and back to Qingdao.
On the service from Asia to Mexico and the U.S. East Coast, which Evergreen calls AUE2 and CSCL calls AAE1, the two lines will deploy eight 4,000-TEU vessels. The first vessel will be Ital Laguina leaving Shanghai on June 15, on the following port rotation: Shanghai, Hong Kong, Yantian, Lazaro Cardenas, New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Miami, Lazaro Cardenas and back to Shanghai.
The two carriers said they have submitted all appropriate filings for the U.S. trades to the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission.
On the loop between Asia and Europe, which Evergreen designates CEM, and CSCL calls AEX1, the carriers are deploying eight 8,000-TEU vessels. The first vessel will be Xin Hong Kong sailing from Qingdao on June 17 with the following port rotation: Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Felixstowe, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Zeebrugge, Hong Kong and back to Qingdao.
