Charles T. "Charlie" Crangle, 71, legislative director for the American Maritime Officers, died in his sleep on Aug. 1 at his home in Washington, the union announced on Tuesday.
Crangle represented the AMO on Capitol Hill for 17 years. Before that, he served as counsel to the House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries and the Congressional Maritime Caucus from 1987-91.
Before his tenure in Washington, Crangle was a high school teacher, municipal administrator and negotiator for three public employee unions. He was also a merchant mariner on the Great Lakes.
The AMO is planning a memorial service in Washington in September. Details will be published later.
